GGGA students Mai Dechathipat, Camilo Mexsen win HJGT Fleming Island

Feb. 18, 2013

The HJGT at Fleming Island had a familiar feel to it.

In late October, GGGA students Camilo Mexsen and Mai Dechathipat lapped the field at the IMG event at Eagle Creek. Mexsen and Dechathipat each won by four and finished the 36-hole event at 7-under-par with a total of 21 birdies.

This weekend, Mexsen and Dechathipat, who are both students in the Full-Time Junior Program at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy, won by nine and five shots respectively to claim their second wins of the year totaling 22 birdies and two eagles.

In the Boys 15-18 Division, Mexsen, of Mexico, got things going with an even-par 71 in the first round Friday and followed with a 1-over 72 to take a five-shot lead into the final round Monday.

With the lead in hand, Mexsen continued to play very aggressively as he notched four birdies on the front nine before closing with nine consecutive pars for a 2-under 69 to finish the event at 1-under for the nine-shot win.

GGGA student Tiger Lee also posted a solid tournament, finishing at 8-over 221 to tie for second.

Over in the Girls 15-18 Division, Dechathipat, of Thailand, started with a 1-over 72 at The Golf Club at Fleming Island and followed with a 2-over 74 to take a two-shot lead going in to the final round.

With fellow GGGA student Harley Dubsky right on her heels, Dechathipat also continued to play very aggressively as she carded five birdies and an eagle en route to a 4-under 67. Dechathipat finished the 54-hole event at even-par 213 to win by five.

Dubsky took second at 5-over 218.

The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour event at Fleming Island was a JWU Series 54 Hole Challenge event played Feb. 16-18.
