GGGA students Dechathipat, Mexsen win IMG Eagle Creek
October 22, 2012
GGGA students Mai Dechathipat and Camilo Mexsen drained birdie after birdie with ease at Eagle Creek Golf Club.
The two combined for 21 birdies over two rounds in fact as they each won their respective divisions at the IMG Junior Golf Tour event at Eagle Creek.
Dechathipat, 15 of Thailand, finished at 7-under 139, setting a new girl’s scoring record en route to winning the Girls Division by four over fellow GGGA students Karen Arimoto and Wenny Chang, who tied for second at 3 under par.
Mexsen, 14 of Mexico, also finished at 7-under 139 also claiming the Boys Division by four.
Dechathipat, No. 24 in the AJGA's Polo Rankings, set a new 18-hole girl’s scoring record with her 6-under 67 in round one Saturday, giving her a three-shot lead over fellow GGGA student Laura Sojo of Colombia. Dechathipat turned in 4-under 32 and carded seven birdies in the opening round.
In the final round Sunday, Dechathipat followed with a 1-under 72 as GGGA students took the top four spots in the Girls Division with Chang and Arimoto tying for second and Sojo finishing fourth at 1 under 145.
While Dechathipat had a strong hold on the Girls Division, Mexsen had to battle his way to victory in the Boys Division.
To start the day Sunday, Mexsen trailed by one to Qi Wen Wong and it stayed that way through six holes as they each picked up a birdie and a bogey and traded pars.
But once Mexsen reached No. 7, he put on a huge charge. That’s where Mexsen began a string of birdies on five out of the next eight holes en route to a 5-under 68 and the four-shot win.
GGGA student Alejandro Lopez jumped his way into the top three with a 3-under 70 in the final round as he finished third at 2-under 144.
